Photoshop Lesson: Replacing Color
|
In this lesson we will
use Photoshop's Replace color tool to precisely adjust a specific
color range. Like the Selective color tool, which can adjust
a selected color throughout the entire image, Replace color
can adjust the portion of the image we select. Though we could
use the mask tool to select the portion of the image by drawing
around the area we want to modify, we will have more control
over the selection with Replace Color.
Usually you would make subtle
changes to a particular color range, but in our example we will
make big changes so to see more clearly. Ok lets get going…

Here is our original picture
of a red Ferrari |
menu - Adjust - Replace Color
to bring up the Replace color window.
The aim here is to adjust the red color of our Ferrari. Move
the window to one side allowing you to see the image.
Click the Selection
button (1)
Click the color selector dropper
(2)
Move the mouse pointer over to image and click on the color
area you want to adjust (here I've clicked on a red section
of the car).
The black and white preview
in the replace color window shows what is selected
The white area is "Selected"
and the black area is "non selected"
Click on the Grow Select dropper
(3) and click on another area of
the color you wish to include in your selection (here I've selected
a darker red on the car)
Using the Fuzziness slider
(4) we can select more or less
of the image.
With the combination of the Grow
Select dropper (3)
and the Fuzziness slider
(4), we can select the color range
we want to adjust. The preview above shows I have selected the
red areas of the car and no background.
Ok that's the tricky part done, now to change the color!
Here using the Hue
control (1) to the extreme, I now
have a yellow Ferrari. The sample
view (2) shows the color change.
Normally you would only want to make small changes to a color
using the transform sliders. To make major changes like this
you have to very critical in the selection process as non-selected
parts wont change and we would end up with a polka dot Ferrari
of red and yellow.
Click OK
to Apply.
Now that was easier than masking around all the red areas of
the car!
I'll mail this to the Ferrari team and maybe next year we'll
see a yellow Ferrari on the track! Or their attorneys on my
back for defacing their car? :) |
